Detroit Tigers hand Tampa Bay Rays their sixth loss in eight games

The Detroit Tigers held off a late push by the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, securing a 10-9 victory on the road.

Detroit got on the board early with a two-run RBI double from Riley Greene in the first inning before keeping Tampa Bay scoreless for the first three innings.

In the top of the third, the tigers erupted at the plate. Dillon Dingler got it started with a 428′ two-run homer to go up 4-0. Moments later, Kerry Carpenter made it 5-0 with a 391′ solo home run of his own.

That’s when Greene stepped back up to the plate and hit a 428′ solo homer to go up 6-0 and cap off a terrific inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Rays finally got on the board with a 422′ two-run home run by Junior Caminero, but the Tigers went back to work in the fifth.

Dingler kept his hot streak going in that inning with a 415′ solo dinger to go up 7-2. In the following inning, Hao-Yu Lee made it a six-run game with a 361′ solo home run.

In dire need of some momentum, Ryan Vilade delivered for Tampa Bay with a 438′ three-run blast in the bottom of the sixth, trimming the deficit to three.

A scoreless inning went by before the Rays tacked on two more runs with two RBI doubles in the eighth.

With innings burning away, Nick Fortes came through for the Rays with a two-run RBI double to make it a three-run game. Almost immediately, Ben Williamson‘s single sent in two more runners on an error.

All of a sudden it was a 10-9 matchup heading into the ninth. With the pressure on the Tigers to stay ahead, Spencer Torkelson got out on a pop fly before Wenceel Perez was struck out.

That’s when Lee was thrown out on a pop fly, giving the Rays one more chance to win the game.

Caminero failed to get on base as he was caught on on a hit to second base moments before Vilade was struck out. With no room for error, Victor Mesa Jr. also struck out, allowing Detroit to escape with the victory.

The narrow loss is the Rays’ sixth in the last eight games and just their seventh home loss of the season.
