Switzerland won their first knockout stage match since 1938 with their 2-0 win over Algeria on Thursday night.

Algeria came out strong early on, finding two of their three first half shots in the first 15 minutes.

However, Switzerland’s first strike of the match was pure quality.

Johan Manzambi would flip in a late cross into the box, awaiting the pass was Breel Embolo, who tapped it in.

The remainder of the first half would stay relatively quiet, that was until the 43rd.

Farès Chaïbi would take a crack on net, forcing Gregor Kobel to make his second save of the night.

The Swiss would take their 1-0 advantage into the half.

Coming out of the half, it took Switzerland just 46 seconds to find their find their second goal of the night.

Following a poor clearance, Dan Ndoye would bury the gift and double Switzerland’s lead.

Similarly to the first half, most of the second remained relatively quiet.

However, in 81st minute, Fabian Rieder would miss a wide-open net that would have nabbed the third of the night for the Swiss.

Switzerland would see their two-goal advantage to full-time, taking home the win and moving on to the round of 16.

They will look forward to their next match at 7 p.m. on Tuesday where they will face the winner of Colombia vs. Ghana.
