Spurs reveal HC Gregg Popovich is recovering from stroke

The San Antonio Spurs have revealed that head coach Gregg Popovich has been out since Nov. 2 because he suffered a mild stroke. Popovich has missed the Spurs’ last six games with what was originally an undisclosed medical issue.

“Popovich, who has already started a rehabilitation program, is expected to make a full recovery,” the Spurs said in a statement. “At this point, a timeline for his return to the sidelines has not been determined. During this time, the organization is grateful to the extended community for providing privacy and space to the Popovich family.”

Popovich is the oldest coach in NBA history at 75 and is in his 29th season as the head coach of the Spurs. He is the winningest coach in league history with 1,390 victories under his belt.

Mitch Johnson has served as the team’s head coach in Popovich’s absence. According to NBA insider Shams Charania, he will remain as the acting head coach for the foreseeable future as Popovich continues to rehabilitate.
