The San Diego Padres announced at 2:30 p.m. June 3 that they have designated 1B/OF Nick Castellanos for assignment.

Castellanos was released by the Philadelphia Phillies on Feb 12, 2026, as reported by Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. He later signed with the Padres as a free agent, signing a one-year $780,000 contract.

Castellanos struggled in San Diego, posting a .191/.221/.339 slash line through his 39 games with the team.

The Padres currently sit in second in the NL West, six games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and just half a game ahead of the third place Arizona Diamondbacks.

With a record of 32-27, the Padres are by no means panicking at this point in the season. However, the team has last lost three of its last four series and are in danger of dropping a fourth series after losing game one to the Phillies Tuesday night 3-2.

As for Castellanos, no more news has come forward since his DFA. The 34-year-old and 13-year-veteran has struggled at the plate in his last few seasons. However, he has shown glimpses of great hitting, posting a .309/.362/.576 slash line in 2021 with the Cincinnati Reds.
