Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin recorded his 34th career hat trick in the team’s 7-4 win over the Utah Mammoth on Thursday. It was also the 21st franchise that Ovechkin recorded a hat trick against.

The hat trick couldn’t have come at a better time for the Capitals. The team was down 3-1 in the first period, before Ovechkin scored two goals in the second period to make it 3-3. Then in the third, the Capitals outscored the Mammoth 3-1 in a seven-minute span, thanks to goals from Anthony Beauvillier, Rasmus Sandin, and Ivan Miroshnichenko. Ovechkin then scored an empty net goal to seal the 7-4 victory.
The win was much needed for the Capitals. The team is on the outside looking in for the playoff picture, sitting six points out of a playoff spot. The Capitals have only missed the playoffs twice in the last 13 years, and are looking to make another run to cap off Ovechkin’s legendary career.
