The NFL has officially upheld Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf’s two-game suspension, following an appeal. Metcalf was suspended for the final two games of the season after swinging at a Detroit Lions fan on Sunday.

In a viral video that captured the altercation, Metcalf walked over to the stands and confronted the fan, who had walked down to field level. Metcalf then grabbed the fan by his blue wig before appearing to take a swing.

The decision to deny his appeal sets a further precedent that any sort of physical altercation between a player and a fan will not be tolerated.

Metcalf will now forfeit over $555,000 in game salary for the two missed games while also voiding $45 million in future guarantees.

He will miss Pittsburgh’s matchups against the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens, but will be eligible to return for a wild-card playoff game if the Steelers secure a postseason spot.

“He did explain to me why he did what he did,” Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters on Tuesday. “I certainly don’t condone the behavior, but I support DK.”

The fan involved was later identified as Ryan Kennedy, who’s actions still remain under review by the league.
