NBA owners to vote on proposed European league

Adam Silver smiling as he addresses reporters during a press conference.

At this week’s board of governor’s meeting, the NBA is set to explore options of a potential annual competition or new league in Europe. This new men’s basketball league would reside in Europe but would be operated by the NBA.

“At this week’s NBA Board of Governors meeting, the league will report on its exploration of a new men’s basketball league in Europe, in partnership with FIBA,” a league spokesperson said in a statement Tuesday.

The league has long been interested in expanding it’s footprint in Europe, NBA commissioner Adam Silver spoke on the topic in January.

“We are looking very closely to see if there’s an opportunity to professionalize the game to another level here, to create a larger commercial opportunity,” Silver said in January.

The NBA has been playing select pre-season and regular season games in Europe since 1993 and although it may be early, we might be seeing a new kind of professional basketball in Europe soon.
