Browns HC Todd Monken calls drafting Brendan Sorsby a ‘slippery slope’

As the NFL supplemental draft approaches, Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken told reporters that he would be hesitant to draft Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby if he’s ruled ineligible to play college football next season.

Sorsby in in the midst of a legal dispute with the NCAA after it was discovered that he placed thousands of sports bets throughout his college career. Some of these bets were reportedly on his own team while he was a backup QB for the Indiana Hoosiers.

Monken said that drafting him wouldn’t be his first choice.

“I don’t think we’re in a position to want to go down that road,” Monken said Monday. “I think that’s a slippery slope when you go down that, irrespective of talent, right? In terms of the situation he’s [put] himself in, we all know what that is. He put himself in that situation. And we’ve seen in other sports with players that have been banned for life from playing in professional sports.”

As of publication, a judge is still mulling a ruling on Sorsby’s request for an injunction for play for Texas Tech next season.

His attorneys claim that the NCAA’s denial of his eligibility is unjust and that his gambling addiction should be treated as a mental illness.

Sorsby recently finished a 35-day rehab program designed for those struggling with gambling problems.

“From my end of it,” Monken said. “Kind of a tough angle to go down that road and think that’s going to be your franchise quarterback if he’s ever eligible to even play in the NFL.”
