Mavericks reportedly hiring Masai Ujiri as replacement for Nico Harrison

According to a team announcement, the Dallas Mavericks have finally found their replacement for Nico Harrison, former Toronto Raptors executive Masai Ujiri.

The Mavericks have named Ujiri the team president and alternate governor, set to begin making decisions as the lead basketball executive.

Ujiri spent time with the Denver Nuggets before joining the Raptors in 2013. He worked his way up to the presidential role by 2016 and was behind the major trade that sent DeMar DeRozan to the San Antonio Spurs for Kawhi Leonard.

That move was the catalyst for the Raptors’ storybook 2019 championship victory. Leonard left after winning the title and the Raptors failed to reach the same postseason success.

After the 2025 NBA Draft, Ujiri left the Raptors, but is back in an executive role less than a year later.

He replaces Harrison, who was fired back in November amid a disappointing season. Harrison faced relentless backlash after making the infamous 2025 deadline trade that sent Luka Doncic to the L.A. Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis.

But with reigning Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg to build around and an experienced executive at the helm, the Mavericks seem to be on the right track.
