Austria secured their first World Cup victory in 36 years following their 3-1 victory over Jordan.

Jordan would open the scoring opportunities early in the second minute when Ehsan Haddad struck a strike wide right.

The match was an end-to-end affair early as both sides found chances on net.

Jordan saw a great chance in the 17th minute when a Odeh Fakhoury strike forced Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager to make a save.

But it was the Austrians who would strike first in the 20th minute.

Austrian midfielder Romano Schmid would collect a pass from Xaver Schlager near the top of the penalty arc.

After a few touches to find control, Scmid would send a rocket into the top corner, putting Austria ahead.

Jordan remained vigilant for a chance to equalize, however.

In the 34th minute Jordan created a great chance to bring themselves even.

Ali Olwan would fire in a hearty strike onto net; where Alexander Schlager would make the initial save.

But Mousa Al-Tamari would control the rebound and attempt another try on goal. But his shot was blocked before it got anywhere near the net.

Jordan would continue look to equalize, creating more opportunities but were not able to break through.

At the half, Schmid’s stunner of a strike was the difference as Austria took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the half Jordon continued their push for an equalizer.

And their persistence would be rewarded in the 50th minute, courtesy of Olwan.

Olwan would slot a strike off the post and in to score Jordan’s first ever World Cup goal to bring the Jordanians level.

Austria managed to find their footing offensively following the Jordanian goal.

In the 67th minute, following an Austrian corner, Marko Arnautovic would seemingly score the go-ahead goal following a bit of chaos in the box.

However, a quick VAR check ruled that Stefan Posch had illegally hand passed the ball to Arnautovic, nullifying the goal.

During the hydration break, Jordan would substitute off goalkeeper Saleem Obaid after he suffered an injury earlier in the contest.

Coming on in his place was Yazeed Abulaila.

Coming out of the break, Austria made it clear they would not be denied their goal.

In a moment that can only be described as “ball don’t lie”, Austria would score just moments after play resumed in the 75th minute.

Another corner pass found its way into the box, but this one was accidently knocked in by Jordanian defender Yazan Al-Arab.

In the 90+2nd minute a dangerous turnover allowed Arnautovic a one-on-one with Jordanian goalkeeper Abulaila.

But Abulaila stood firm, keeping the deficit at only one.

In the 90+12 minute, Austria would be awarded a penalty after VAR conformed a handball inside the box committed by Obaid.

Arnautovic would step up to reclaim his goal which was nullified due to a VAR check earlier in the match.

Arnautovic would bury the penalty with no issue, sealing the Austrian 3-1 win.

Austria and Jordan with both play their second match of the group stage on Monday.

Jordan will face off against Algeria at 11 a.m.

And Austria will match up against defending champions Argentina at 1 p.m.
