The Carolina Hurricanes outlasted the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-4 on Thursday with Sebastian Aho scoring the game-winner with 13 minutes left.

The Hurricanes scored three of their goals in the first seven minutes of the game. Nikolaj Ehlers scored first, followed by Logan Stankoven and Taylor Hall. The Lightning were able to get two goals back in the first, with Brandon Hagel and Nikita Kucherov scoring within 45 seconds of each other.

Dominic James then tied the game 3-3, scoring in under two minutes into the second period. The Hurricanes then retook the lead thanks to Seth Jarvis scoring his 26th goal of the season before Brayden Point tied it again on the power-play to make it 4-4. That’s when Jarvis scored on a slapshot in the third to squeak out a 5-4 victory.

The game was a battle between two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference. The Lightning are currently first with 80 points, and the Hurricanes are currently second with 78. The Hurricanes also snapped the Lightning’s six-game win streak.

The Hurricanes’ next game will be on Saturday, Feb. 28, against the Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings are also a top team this season, sitting at third in the Eastern Conference with 72 points.
