Houston Astros

Houston Astros activating 2B Jose Altuve off of 10-IL

At 4:16 p.m. the Houston Astros announced via X that Jose Altuve would be returning to the active roster, due to this move, OF Zach Dezenzo has been optioned to Triple-A

The 16-year-veteran suffered an oblique strain on May 16 in a game against the Texas Rangers would exit said game early, according to an article from Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.

Jose Altuve’s numbers at the plate have steadily declined over the last 4 seasons. However, this decline could be attributed to Altuve being 36 years of age.

The Venezuelan did not participate in the 2026 World Baseball Classic at the request of the Astros, according to an article by McTaggart.

A WBC which saw Venezuela upset the likes of both Japan and the U.S. en route to the countries first ever WBC title.

The Astros failed to reach postseason in 2025 after posting a record of 87-75, they missed a chance at their ninth straight October due to a tiebreak with the Detroit Tigers which saw the Motor City Kitties snatch the final Wild Card spot.

The Astros have struggled early in recent seasons but have capitalized on a weak division in the AL West, as well as finding their groove later in the season to propel themselves to the playoffs.

For Astros fans, it’s not time to push the panic button just yet, Yordan Alvarez is currently playing out of his mind. And with the injury news to Yankees left fielder Aaron Judge coming on Thursday, the AL MVP may be Alvarez’s to lose.

That, in combination with the return of Altuve may and what seems to be yet another weak year for AL West teams could see the Astros sneak their way into the playoffs, regardless of their early season woes.
