Hotspurs Cling to Safety as Relegation Drama Goes to the Wire

With West Ham’s 3-1 loss at the hands of Newcastle today, Tottenham Hotspurs have a chance to avoid one of the most inconceivable relegations in modern English soccer history.

Tottenham currently sits at 38 points, just two clear of the final relegation spot.

They’ll take on Chelsea on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. Eastern Standard Time for their 37th match of the season. Here’s what they need to punch their ticket to their 49th straight season in England’s topflight.

It’s as simple as, win or draw. Both outcomes will keep Tottenham up and relegate West Ham. A loss makes things more complicated; here are more detailed dives into each outcome.

With a win, Tottenham will go 5 points clear of West Ham, and with one match week remaining, it will solidify their spot in the Premier League.

With a draw, they will move 3 points clear, and because they hold the tiebreaker over West Ham on goal difference, this will also solidify their spot for next season.

However, with a loss, West Ham remains just 2 points behind Tottenham, meaning this relegation battle will come down to the final match week of the season. Here is how that scenario plays out.

Similar to match week 37, if Tottenham can win or draw, they’ll stay up, however, if Tottenham loses their matchup against Everton on Sunday. A West Ham against win against Leeds United, also on Sunday, will see Tottenham drop to 18th in the Premier League, while also taking the final relegation spot.

Both Tottenham and West Ham will play at 11 a.m. EST.
