A baseball fan was hospitalized on Wednesday after falling over a railing and into the Kansas City bullpen as the Chicago White Sox went head-to-head with the Kansas City Royals.

During the bottom of the third inning, the White Sox scored a run on a sacrifice fly ball, prompting the fan to rise up in celebration before falling over the railing and into the visiting bullpen.

“From what I’ve heard, the fan was kind of standing up on the edge of the bullpen, and kind of just went over,” said Royals pitcher Nick Mears after the incident. “Then saw him lying there.”

It wasn’t long until stadium officials got the attention of the umpires and made them aware of the situation.

The game was temporarily delayed as the fan was given medical assistance before being stretchered out of the bullpen and taken to a hospital.

“Baseball is just a game,” Mears said. “Obviously human lives are something different. Just created space for all of the people to come in and try to help him out. Making sure that he had the best care that he could get in that moment was kind of our priority.”

The White Sox did not provide an update on the fan’s condition, although Mears said a security guard told him that he was in better condition by the time he reached the hospital.
