Eagles Host Commanders in Sunday Night Preview

Philadelphia hosts Washington on Sunday night amid offensive inefficiencies, injury impacts, and defensive vulnerabilities.

NFL news on Ball Exclusives

The Philadelphia Eagles host the Washington Commanders on Sunday night in a Week 7 NFC East matchup.

Philadelphia quarterback Tanner McKee has struggled when facing extra rushers, according to game analysis. Right tackle Lane Johnson is unavailable, worsening pass protection. The Eagles plan quick throws to tight end Dallas Goedert and rookie wide receiver Makai Lemon to mitigate pressure. Goedert presents a favorable matchup: Washington has struggled covering tight ends.

Philadelphia needs those short completions to avoid third-and-long situations. Running back Saquon Barkley’s workload remains uncertain.

For Washington, keeping quarterback Jayden Daniels comfortable is the priority. Philadelphia ranks last in sack rate and quick pressure. Opponents average 7.9 yards per pass attempt when not pressured. Daniels has averaged 8.0 and 7.5 yards per attempt in his two games since returning from an elbow injury.

Stefon Diggs’ availability matters. If active, he can exploit the Eagles’ weakness against slot receivers. Daniels’ mobility also threatens defenders who break coverage discipline.

Philadelphia’s defensive strategy must emphasize disciplined rush lanes to limit Daniels’ scrambling.

Neither offense converts third downs effectively. Washington converts 30.9% of third downs. Philadelphia’s third-down efficiency is similarly poor. Winning early downs will likely determine which team controls tempo.

Washington allows 28.7 points per game and has surrendered touchdowns on 18 of 22 opponent red zone trips. Philadelphia does not need full offensive efficiency to score — just consistent red zone execution.

The Eagles are favored to cover the point spread. Analysts cite Washington’s defensive generosity and inconsistent scoring as reasons.

A bet on the over is plausible but less certain. Both defenses allow at least 25 points per game, and a 23–20 outcome would clear the total. However, Philadelphia’s injuries could stall promising drives.

Rookie wide receiver Antonio Williams is projected for increased usage after Terry McLaurin’s season-ending knee injury. Williams caught three of four targets for 50 yards in Week 6 and has recorded three receptions in each of his past three games. He is expected to operate as an outlet receiver against Philadelphia’s zone schemes.

Goedert averages over six targets per game and ranks fifth among tight ends in red zone target share (30%). With DeVonta Smith sidelined, Goedert’s role expands. Washington has allowed the second-most touchdowns to tight ends (8), including two to Goedert in Week 1.
