Five-star UNC commit Dylan Mingo reopens his recruitment

Dylan Mingo/IG

Dylan Mingo, five-star recruit and top-ranked point guard in the class of 2026, has decommitted from the North Carolina Tar Heels and has reopened his recruitment, according to a social media post Monday.

Mingo is an elite-level recruit and originally committed to the Tar Heels when head coach Hubert Davis was still there two months ago. With Mike Malone now at the wheel, Mingo is headed to a new school.

As a 6’5″ point guard, Mingo is a crafty ball-handler with a knack for scoring. He missed most of his senior season with an ankle injury, but averaged 23.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 6.8 assists at the NBA Top 100 Camp last summer.

Before committing to UNC, his other top schools were Baylor, Washington and Penn State.

Monday’s announcement is a stark contrast to the Tar Heels’ news earlier on Monday, when they landed a commitment from Virginia Tech transfer guard Neoklis Avdalas.

Malone and the Tar Heels will now have to expand their transfer portal search if they want to bring in a guard to fill the role that Mingo was going to fill.

James Parker contributed to this story.
