No. 19 Texas Tech Red Raiders opened the men’s college basketball season with a 76-42 victory over the Jackson State Tigers on Monday night in Lubbock.

Texas Tech guard Damarion Dennis scored 22 points off the bench in his debut, making 8 of 12 field goals and hitting four 3-pointers. Cruz Davis added 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and six steals. Josiah Mosley contributed 13 points and eight rebounds.

The Red Raiders led 38-18 at halftime after closing the first half on a 16-2 run. Texas Tech forced 24 Jackson State turnovers and converted them into 29 points. The team recorded 12 steals.

Jackson State shot 29% overall and 21% from 3-point range, with 29 of its 48 shots coming from beyond the arc. Mike Williams led the Tigers with 11 points. It was head coach Trey Johnson’s debut — nearly 20 years after he last guided Jackson State to the NCAA Tournament.

Texas Tech began the season without All-America post player JT Toppin, who is rehabbing from a right ACL tear suffered in February. Darrion Williams scored one point and grabbed five rebounds in his Texas Tech debut.

The win extended Texas Tech’s nonconference home winning streak to 47 games and marked the program’s 27th consecutive season-opening victory. Jackson State plays at Tulane on Thursday; Texas Tech hosts Bethune-Cookman on Thursday.
