Orioles’ Craig Albernaz suffers broken jaw, 7 facial fractures after line drive to face

Baltimore Orioles manager Craig Albernaz took a line drive directly to the face during Monday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Despite extensive injuries, he showed up for Tuesday’s matchup against the same squad.

He told reporters on Tuesday that he has seven facial fractures as well as a broken jaw and must eat soft food for six weeks, but did not need surgery.

The hit came from a foul ball by Orioles second baseman Jeremiah Jackson. Albernaz left the dugout immediately and cleared concussion protocol before getting a CT scan done.

Luckily for Baltimore, Jackson went on to hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to cut the Orioles’ deficit to just one run.

Baltimore ultimately secured a 9-7 victory and Jackson signed his grand slam ball before gifting it to Albernaz after the game.

James Parker contributed to this story.
