Byram signs record-breaking six-year extension with Blackhawks

Apr 19, 2026; Buffalo, New York, USA; Buffalo Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram (4) looks to make a pass during the second period against the Boston Bruins in game one of the first round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs at KeyBank Center, Timothy T. Ludwig-IMAGN IMAGES

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed Bowen Byram to a six-year, $12.6 million extension, making him the highest-paid defenseman in the NHL.

Byram recorded a career-high in goals (11) and points (42) with the Buffalo Sabres last season, along with seven points in 13 playoff games. The 25-year-old wanted an opportunity to play a No. 1 role, and he’ll get the chance to play big minutes on a rebuilding Chicago team.

The Blackhawks acquired Byram in return for the No. 4 pick, which the Sabres used to select defenseman Daxon Rudolph.

Chicago’s defensive core now consists of Byram, Artyom Levshunov, Sam Rinzel and Alex Vlasic.
