Texas Tech transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby is entering a gambling addiction treatment program, the school announced on Monday.

“Texas Tech’s primary focus remains on fostering an environment where student-athletes feel empowered to prioritize their mental health and seek professional assistance,” the statement read. “To protect the integrity of the recovery process, Texas Tech will have no further comment on Brendan’s status or treatment progress at this time. We kindly ask the media and the public to respect the privacy of Brendan and his family.”

Sorsby will reportedly be away from the Red Raiders as he enters a residential treatment program that specializes in gambling addiction.

He’s currently under NCAA investigation after thousands of online bets on various sports were reportedly discovered, having been placed by Sorsby.

He reportedly bet on Indiana Hoosiers football games while he was redshirting as a freshman there in 2022. Sorsby reportedly placed bets on the Hoosiers to win in games that he didn’t appear in.

Red Raiders head coach Joey McGuire released a statement on Monday as well.

“We love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help,” McGuire said. “Taking this step requires courage, and our primary focus is on him as a person. Our program is behind Brendan as he prioritizes his health.”

Sorsby’s bets reportedly haven’t been linked to any on-field interference or larger gambling schemes.

He transferred to Texas Tech from Cincinnati this winter and was widely regarded as one of the top players in the transfer portal. A timeline for his treatment and return to the team has not been determined.

An NCAA ruling on the investigation could strip Sorsby of his eligibility, although the timeline for this is unclear as well.
