BREAKING: Utah Mammoth set to acquire Flames’ MacKenzie Weegar

The Calgary Flames agree to send MacKenzie Weegar to the Utah Mammoth. Weegar has a no-trade clause and has to waive it to complete the trade.

Weegar brings a veteran presence that would immediately boost the Mammoth’s blue line ahead of the playoffs. He currently leads the Flames with 23:07 of ice time per game, with three goals and 18 assists on the season. Weegar’s contract runs through the 2030-31 season, with a $6.25 million cap hit.

It has been another disappointing season for the Flames. The team is set to miss the playoffs for the fourth season in a row and is now in full tank mode. The team traded star defenseman Rasmus Andersson to the Vegas Golden Knights back in January and is reportedly shopping Blake Coleman and Nazem Kadri before Friday’s trade deadline.

For the Mammoth, they are looking to make the playoffs for the first time as a franchise since relocating. The last time they made the playoffs was in 2020, when they were the Arizona Coyotes.
