Long-time Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin received a five-game suspension for his slash on Sabres’ Rasmus Dahlin during Thursday’s game. It’s the third time in his career he’s been suspended.
The suspension couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Penguins. They are currently tied with the Islanders for the second seed in the Metropolitan Division at 75 points. Captain Sidney Crosby has also been sidelined from an injury sustained while playing for Canada during the Olympics. The Penguins will now have to play the next handful of games without both of their superstars.
Malkin won’t be eligible to play until March 16 against the Colorado Avalanche. He has 13 goals and 34 assists in 46 games so far this season.
