Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke dies at age 29

Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke has died at the age of 29, both the team and his agency confirmed on Tuesday. They did not announce a cause of death.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke,” the team said in a statement. “Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten. We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Clarke was drafted 21st overall by the Grizzlies in 2019 and spent all seven seasons in Memphis. He had a promising rookie campaign that saw him finish fourth in voting for the Rookie of the Year award.

Over the next few seasons, he developed into an impactful player off the bench. After a few years of growth, injuries became the biggest problem hampering his career.

He tore his Achilles during the 2022-23 season, missing nearly the entire following season to recover. He saw the court less in the 2024-25 season before a knee injury sidelined him for the last handful of games.

After missing time to start the 2025-26 season, he sustained a calf injury that put him out for the rest of the campaign.

In April, Clarke made headlines as he was arrested after police accused him of speeding, reckless driving and possessing a controlled substance. Law enforcement said Clarke had a surplus of kratom in his car.

Shortly afterwards, he was released from jail and was expected to suit up for the Grizzlies next season.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver released a statement shortly after Tuesday’s news broke.

“We are devastated to learn of the passing of Brandon Clarke. As one of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Brandon’s family, friends and the Grizzlies organization.”
