The Chicago Bears’ Board of Directors has voted to advance stadium development in Hammond, Indiana, the team announced on Friday.

“We believe a world-class stadium project in Hammond will transform the region, connecting Northwest Indiana to the South Side of Chicago through the Loop and across neighborhoods and suburbs stretching north of the city,” the team said in a statement. “It will bring Chicagoland together and deliver new opportunities to its residents and businesses.”

This is the first time the Bears’ board has voted on development for a new stadium, although an exact site has yet to be selected.

“There is more work to do but barring anything very strange, it’s a done deal,” one source told ESPN.

The news comes after Illinois lawmakers closed the weekend without passing a bill to keep the team in the state. The failed bill would have allowed to Bears to build a stadium in Illinois without having to pay property taxes on it.

Now, it looks like the team has opted to cross state lines into Indiana.
