Saint Mary’s Gaels Edge Illinois State 90–85 in OT

Mantas Juzenas had 20 points and 11 rebounds — including five in overtime — as Saint Mary’s Gaels beat Illinois State Redbirds 90–85 in their men’s college basketball season opener.

Saint Mary’s Gaels defeated Illinois State Redbirds 90–85 in overtime Monday in their men’s college basketball season opener.

Saint Mary’s forward Mantas Juzenas recorded 20 points and 11 rebounds. He scored five of those points during overtime. Guard Thomas Ndong contributed 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field and made three of four free throws. He also pulled down six rebounds. Forward Evangelos Zougris shot 7-of-7 from the field and finished with 16 points.

Illinois State guard Johnny Kinziger led all scorers with 30 points and dished out four assists. Guard Malik Moore added 16 points, four assists and two steals. Forward Mason Klabo scored 12 points.

Saint Mary’s trailed 39–33 at halftime. Ndong scored nine of his 18 points before intermission. Zougris scored the final six points of the game to seal the victory.

Saint Mary’s hosts North Dakota State on Wednesday. Illinois State hosts Central State (OH) on Thursday.
