Egypt vs. Australia would take all 120 minutes plus penalties to decide who would win their first knockout stage in history.

In the end, Egypt would take advantage of two Australian mistakes to secure their first knockout stage victory ever.

Egypt would draw first blood in the 13th minute when Emam Ashour stuck home a Karim Hafez lob into the box with fierce header.

The goal marked the first time since 1934 that Egypt has recorded a knockout stage goal.

Australia would outshoot Egypt six to three in the first half but would only find one shot on target.

Egypt would hold their once goal advantage heading into halftime.

Coming out of the half, Australia would substitute Jordan Bos off due to an injury he suffered near the end of the first half.

Kai Trewin would come on to replace Bos, marking his first appearance of the 2026 World Cup.

Egypt would start the second half quickly, right off the kickoff in fact.

Omar Marmoush would receive a pass into the box from Mostafa Zico.

Marmoush would take a few touches before taking a strike, but he’d put the ball just wide.

In the 54th minute, Australia would receive a dangerous freekick from just outside the box following a Zico foul.

Aiden O’Neill’s cross into the box would look to take advantage of Australia’s height size advantage.

The club of red and yellow jerseys in the box would cause an own goal from Egyptian Mohamed Hany, scoring Australia’s first goal of the tournament since their first groups stage match against Turkey.

Following Australia’s equalizer, both sides would find themselves in a bit of a deadlock.

25 minutes after the goal, both sides would combine for just three shots.

In the final 15 minutes of the match however, both sides would turn the offense up to 11.

Both teams would combine for 9 shots in those 15 minutes.

Egypt would force Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach to make an absolutely sensational save late in stoppage-time.

Following a long looping ball into the box, Egypt’s Ramy Rabia would look to head the pass right into goal.

But Beach, with a massive left hand, knocked the header over the bar and out for an Egyptian corner, keeping the game level.

With Beach’s save, the full-time whistle would see both sides finish regulation even at one.

The first half of extra time would just see two shots, both coming courtesy of Egypt, but neither being on target

Through the final 15 minutes, only Egypt would find a shot on target, coming in the 109th minute from Marawan Attia, which Beach would save.

In the 119th minute, Australia would substitute Beach off in favor of Mathew Ryan for the impending penalty shootout.

Neither side could find a goal through the 30 minutes of extra-time, leading to the third penalty shootout of the 2026 World Cup.

Harry Souttar would lead off the shootout, skying his attempt well over the bar.

Mahmoud Saber looked to put Egypt ahead in the shootout following Souttar’s miss.

Australian goalkeeper Ryan would guess correctly, but Saber would put it just over the Aussie.

Jackson Irvine would take Austrialia’s next attempt, confidently slotting it into the top right corner.

Rabia would push Ryan the wrong way as well, putting Egypt up once again 2-1 after two rounds.

Awer Mabil slotted his strike bottom right, doing everything he could to help his nation.

Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool man, would take his attempt right down Broadway, keeping Egypt perfect in the shootout.

Lucas Herrington would find his shot just high, ricocheting off the crossbar.

Hossam Abdelmaguid stepped up, knowing his penalty could send Egypt through a knockout stage match for the first time ever.

And he would, winning it for Egypt and advancing them to face the winner of Argentina vs. Cape Verde.

Egypt’s group of 16 match will take place at noon on Tuesday.
