Cote d’Ivoire upset Ecuador with late game drama in 1-0 victory

Cote d’Ivoire used a bit of late game heroics to secure their first World Cup win against a higher ranked opponent in history.

The first half saw both sides create plenty of opportunities to take the lead, with 12 shots in the first half, six a piece.

However, Ecuador really struggled to get anything on target, with all six of their shots missing the mark.

Even with the myriads of opportunities for either side, neither could get a shot to find the back of the net.

And so, the first half ended scoreless.

The second half was much of the same, with neither side being able to find pay dirt through the 80th minute.

But it wasn’t for a lack of trying, with both sides coming painfully close to breaking the deadlock.

A crossbar denial and a save by Cote d’Ivoire goalkeeper Yahia Fofana continued the goal drought.

But all that changed in the 90th minute, a Wilfried Singo run down the far sideline created another opportunity for Cote d’Ivoire.

Singo would slide a pass to Amad Diallo who had been subbed in early in the second half. Diallo would take the pass first touch, sinking the ball into the back of the net and propelling Cote d’Ivoire ahead 1-0.

This win for Les Éléphants may not be as shocking as some may think.

Following their 2-1 victory over France in their final friendly match, many have touted them as a dark horse and a team to keep an eye on.

For Ecuador, this loss now forces them into a must win situation for both of their remaining matches.

Ecuador and Cote d’Ivoire will both play Saturday.

With Cote d’Ivoire facing off against Germany at 4 p.m., and Ecuador against Curaçao at 8 p.m.
